The Dark Ranger, after you find out where Saurfang is, literally tells you to go back to Orgrimmar and not pursue this any further before flying off. Saying she has to go report to Sylvanas. Then you find her already at Saurfang with a retinue of Deathguard about to kill him.

I don't, at all. They were going to "take him" and then he disappears and we get told he was killed by the Alliance. That's the smart play by Sylvanas. It rallies Saurfang's allies to her side.
True but if she had Saurfang on her side again it might seize the unrest within her ranks over honor with having Saurfang returned. I do agree with you though they were going to kill him then and there.

She says in A Good War that if he left the Horde he'd be a powerful enemy. And she's already killing her own allies who she even THINKS are defecting, even when they aren't. There's no way she wanted him back alive to continue to publicly undermine her actiosn.
