Great that booksales grow but it doesn't necessarily mean that reading increases. Maybe people buy more books as libraries are being axed. What happens with the breadth and depth of reading?
-
library use has seen a massive uptick, at least here in the US. millennials love libraries.

For some reason, about 18 months ago, I spontaneously got a library card after not having one for 8+ years and started going to library. I think I got sick of paying Amazon. I've checked out/read like 25+ books and now have library fines again, just like the old days.

so many people have rediscovered their local library in the past year.

After ebooks came out, I remember everyone trying to read digitally for everything because it was New and Fresh, but the fact is that there are just some things that are a better experience in print.
-
My high school students feel the same way. If they are going to read for pleasure, they want a physical book.
-
I have a hierarchy. If taking notes, I do marginalia, so I go with print, used preferred. Ebooks lose so many annotations that the risks outweigh convenience. I do some print/e duplication for reference works. Fiction reading & lit mags are e for me, but print for fave writers.
-
lately I’m finding I have to own all my faves in print... Dickens, Donna Tartt... I need to be able to hold them in my hands.
-
I like owning print for some things b/c it's less riskier than online, and I still remember the early days of ereaders when books were removed from devices by Amazon &c. I buy epubs from the publisher direct (unless I can't) b/c a company isn't mediating my device content.

For people in the comments: While you're lauding the printed book (which I also love, don't get me wrong) it's important to remember that ebooks are amazingly important for disabled people in terms of accessibility.
-
Totally agree! I wrote a blog post titled “Why Kindle is superior to the paperback” in an attempt to bring people’s attention to the fact it makes reading so much more accessible to many people. Something many don’t realise. Dyslexic? Large print? Arthritis/dexterity problems etc

kindles are so useful if you happen to be the type of person who carries a stack of books everywhere and walks a lot
