Why is it always “out of an abundance of caution”? Too much caution can be detrimental at times. Why not “out of some caution” or “a bit of caution”? Or just “caution”?

An abundance of caution is getting the balance of risks wrong. If we're bang overly cautious about vaccine risks, then *by definition* we're not being cautious enough about disease risks.

I always took that phrase to be shorthand for "I'm going to do something that is irregular, unsupported, possibly dangerous, and certainly wasteful, and pretend it's because I'm just trying extra hard to look like I'm doing something"

Because it's 1 fatality in 6.5 million people. That's out of an "it doesn't make any sense" amount of caution.

The phrase “abundance of caution” should retire. “Re-imagine” is a close second.

Yes. Hospitals are always reimagining healthcare out of an abundance of BS.
