Before my first day, I told one person (my lead). With my permission, an announcement was posted in the private Slack channel for writers along with an explanation of how they/them works. I didn't have to do this, nor answer any questions.

Now here is the key thing: there was a clear, concerted effort on the part of my studio to make sure everyone knew my pronouns. I work with people in 4 different countries, and yet all of my coworkers use my pronouns without issue.

The only time I ever had to put any emotional/mental effort towards this matter was when someone asked how I wanted to be referred to in languages that don't currently have a singular they. It was very polite, and my answer was accepted without question.

A couple people have messed up, but each one has immediately corrected themselves, and most have sent me a message on Slack saying: Sorry! I'll do better. That's it - no self-flagellation or debate.

This only happens when you have cis folks keeping other cis folks in check. You have to be willing to correct both yourself and your peers.

The place I work for has an age range of 20-50+, communicates in several languages across cultures and countries, and hundreds of people are employed. Yet I can openly use they/them without issue, despite being (to my knowledge) the only out nonbinary person. It's possible!

So if you care about keeping trans and nonbinary folks safe, put the effort in. Don't put the weight on us and make us fear getting into conflict with coworkers (or superiors!). It'll make the workplace better for everyone, anyway.

I never thought about this! I'll ask my lead about being proactive about my pronouns at the office!
