Upcoming VFX Artist React guest is the VFX Supervisor for Avatar 2, Eric Saindon. It was awesome!
He shared a breakdown of the infamous hand strap shot and the truth blew my mind. No one was right about it!
Stay tuned for the first episode with him soon!!
It's gonna be entirely dedicated to Avatar: The Way of Water! A movie with the best effects I've ever seen and there's not even a close second.
And yes I asked about caustics 😎😜
!!
(incredible site btw, go follow!)
I just think he undersold how much of the final shot ended up being CG in the interview. However, the specifics of how and why were amazing!

I could hack this into something workable if I animated their forward motion in addition to the walk cycle, baking that out to an alembic sequence and then instance cloning THAT...
But being able to direct their paths along a surface would be very useful!
Do any #Cinema4D pros out there have any advice on setting up an Ant model with animated walk cycle as part of a particle system?
I made this with a simple instance cloner, but the animation didn't pass through so I just added random rotation.
Im pretty sure this is fake, the robot is just a mocapped human!
Especially at the beginning the lighting feels off with the robot making it look unrealistic and when it picks up the bag the bag changes slightly and it teleports a bit when it is thrown!

Everything Everywhere: I didn’t have the time to do this in 3D so I crudely painted the ingredients with the paintbrush tool in after effects and animated them with keyframes. Add some motion blur and voilà.

Alright internet. Please send me all the examples you can think of where something was MARKETED as being practical DESPITE ultimately being replaced with CGI in the final product.
Yeah I saw the Reddit thread of the dude who said he worked on the movie (but not the shot) claiming it’s real. Perhaps it is! That’s not evidence though.
This is why it’s fascinating! What will we find out next?! They’re doing something unusual here for SURE.
Like I still don’t believe there are any blue painted arms in the movie. The creature UNDER the raft is most likely CG.
Which means if they actually KEPT the plate of the saddle… the shot is now even harder?!!? Melding these elements together is hard!!!
There’s some credence now to the shot being at least partially real. Or more specifically, ORIGINALLY real.
I can’t yet believe that it’s 100% practical as people are arguing, but this would make the shot even more complicated now!!
I’ve made a very public and bold statement about a shot being CGI, and if it turns out it really isn’t I have no problem admitting being wrong. However
Despite the first piece of evidence seeming to imply otherwise, I think I might stand by my point for now? It’s fascinating tho
Also shoutout to Luka who was super chill and very patient with me as I had him stay perfectly still for several minutes at a time while I scanned him.
This was already a super exciting project but as an NBA fan it was personally very cool!
A week ago I was raving madman about the potential of radiance fields
This week I was the creative director for Luka Doncic’s latest ‘Nerf’ video
wtf how did this move so fast
We collaborated with @dallasmavs Luka Dončić @luka7doncic, Hasbro Nerf, and Corridor Digital @CorridorDigital on a super fun project!

These shots aren't real.
This next-gen imaging tech is SO POWERFUL and yet... most people still don't get it.
So I made a video to give you EVERYTHING you need to know about why #NeuralRadianceFields are a big deal.

Here are some new examples:
NeRFs work really well at night! Since the goal is to replicate the footage rather than triangulate a mesh through photogrammetry... scenes that were too dark before are now suddenly now valid OPTIONS.
