Copping so much flack for this tweet. This was not about my ego. It was about highlighting one of a thousand instances of sexism that women encounter every day. It’s not about the title, it’s about the fact that this wouldn’t have happened if I was a man.https://twitter.com/Siobhan_ODwyer/status/1035490124589674496 …

Hey @Qantas, my name is Dr O’Dwyer. My ticket says Dr O’Dwyer. Do not look at my ticket, look at me, look back at my ticket, decide it’s a typo, and call me Miss O’Dwyer. I did not spend 8 years at university to be called Miss.

I'd get it if you were a medical doctor but not a doctor of anthropology or something. Even "doctor" Indiana Jones let the Asian kid call him "Indy" on their plane.

Are you both a medical doctor and a PhD? Because if you’re not, how could you possibly know whether one is harder than the other? Or is this just about your perception of social status?

Well, "Doctor" , I know which one is more useful on a plane and it's not the "Doctor" of town planning! Also medicine is a lot harder, so they deserve the title more than someone that just hung around uni too long...

I’d say. The Dr that is useful in an emergency on a plane is probably dependant on the emergency. It seems that the only emergency we can think of is illness, not the fact it’s a huge steel structure thousands of feet in the air and a “Dr” or team of, may have designed it.

Whenever there’s a medical emergency on a plane, they always ask for a Medical Doctor to come forward. So they do know there are other kinds!

Bullshit it's about sexism. I have a PhD, and was in Qantas Chairman's Lounge (the highest status, invitation only) for over a dozen years. There were any number of times cabin crew referred to me as "Mr. Jensen". Last time I looked, I wasn't a woman being discriminated against!

Perhaps if you saw it in the context of what O’Dwyer was complaining about, you would see it makes eminent sense. Context is everything!

Your tweet is exactly about ego. How many male doctors write tweets to @qantas complaining they get called Mr & not Dr ? If they did, they would cop exactly same the responses as you.

This is a ridiculous, unfounded argument. Millions of people, male and female, find zero offense at being addressed politely as "Miss," "Sir, "Ma'am," etc. Eight years of education does not entitle you to preferential treatment. If you were my doctor, I'd switch...stat.

It should be outlawed and not used by any person who cannot be called upon for medical help in an emergency.
