THIS. Your team can’t see inside your head and it’s your job to help them understand you and your actions. Trust breeds success and stability!

“Most of us remember critical feedback...But positive feedback is an invaluable way to learn about your strengths and growth areas.” Tease apart the themes/strengths from mixed feedback and use them in new situations.

When friends are doubting their career choices & pondering making a switch (esp during bouts of insecurity), this is what I tell 'em: "You're smart enough not to be defined by your job title. You'd be great in most career paths you pursue. You just have to decide what you want."

This was consistently my favourite promotion when I worked with this team. Looks like it’s even better this year, and free!

"One of the best tricks...for building team trust is the importance of assuming good intentions...This is hard...[but] by assuming good intentions, you can then go to the person with a voice of concern, rather than one of attack or judgement."

This is the HARDEST thing to do. You just want to help, but that won’t help your team grow. And more often than not, they’ll have all sorts of reasons why your solution doesn’t work. Listen, they already have the answers.

Doing a proper year end review: “It drains our energy to focus on where we derailed and try to course-correct, putting us in a compromised mental state of doubt and fear of failure.” You news to focus on wins too!

Hey, now lists speaking opportunities! I want to encourage more underrepresented people in tech to be on stage driving conversations if they want to. I primarily share speaking opportunities that at least cover travel & accommodation.

On career advice: “[A]dvice seekers usually undervalue people who know [them] very deeply regardless of expertise in [their] specific professional work & [those] who have direct experience with the Co., role & people [they]’re considering."

“[B]eing aware of the Pygmalion Effect...is essential if you want to have a positive impact on [someone’s] performance." There is ample evidence to support that well hidden expectations (good or bad) have a huge impact on outcomes.

"The Peak-end Rule says that people judge an experience based on how they felt at its peak and its end, not the average of every moment of the experience. And that’s true whether the experience was good or bad."

The last lecture is a fascinating exercise! The struggles outlined by are likely familiar to most of us so the learnings are similarly relevant: ‘Good challenges vs. bad challenges’
