    My broad goal is to improve the accuracy, rigor, amount and effectiveness of research on minority pops. On tw I follow experts on methods, stats, political bias, ethics and a variety of substantive areas including feminism,education, etc. Links below to my relevant papers:

    Social networks are so important Even in very rigid promotion systems like the military we talk a lot about the importance of mentorship. Also minorities in power have to be careful not to look like they are favoring people who look like them this is not true for majority members

    I’m just going to say it again. Start building relationships with senior people, bc when you eventually do need letters, they’ll be there to write them. I hate to make it so transactional sounding, and I don’t mean it that way. But that’s the hidden curriculum. 1/n

    Definitely an interesting study. It's hard to establish counterfactuals in studies looking at effects of race.

    Most people do jobs because of the money and the benefits. I'm not sure why people think that's different for the Army.

    When I started college, I learned that most of my peers didn't have the US ARMY or National Guard tabling in their high school everyday. They were shocked. The military preys on certain demographics - so when he says so the rich kids can just stay at home, he's not lying

    See the tweet for more details but basically if you can't tell how many times a police officer encounters minority civilians you can't estimate bias. Good methods is always important but it becomes more important for politically charged issues.

    Have now had a chance to read this study. Yes, it is consistent with a recent PNAS study. That's not a good thing. We cannot tell which officers are more likely to shoot people *using only data on shootings*. Controlling for shooting attributes *does not fix this* (1/n)
