Social networks are so important Even in very rigid promotion systems like the military we talk a lot about the importance of mentorship. Also minorities in power have to be careful not to look like they are favoring people who look like them this is not true for majority members

Definitely an interesting study. It's hard to establish counterfactuals in studies looking at effects of race.

Any time you're in the minority you face the catch-22 of civility. To spark change you often need to take aggressive approaches but doing so will lessen your effectiveness and allow your opponents to smear you as unreasonable.

Not my area of expertise and not a debate I'm fond of but the question of genetics relationship with racial disparities is important. See thread 👇

This is an eggregious case of other-race bias “they all look alike” If the BBC can make this mistake with Kobe & LeBron, that gives you a sense of how common this is with normal people. This has a big impact on eye-witness identification in court cases

Most people do jobs because of the money and the benefits. I'm not sure why people think that's different for the Army.

See the tweet for more details but basically if you can't tell how many times a police officer encounters minority civilians you can't estimate bias. Good methods is always important but it becomes more important for politically charged issues.
