Unpopular opinion (at least among streamers): follower alerts are bad. I usually lurk in streams, and I don't to be called out. I specifically wait until a streamer goes offline to follow in case they have alerts, and I know I've forgotten to follow in the past because of this.

How do you feel about a very small area of the screen (below splits) that thank new followers silently and they're not read by the steamer out loud. Hard to imagine that doesn't please all types of people. At least that's what I told myself when adding it to the layout

Personally I'd still prefer to not have them, but that's still miles better. According to this poll (not exactly the same, but close) it's actually pretty split though.https://twitter.com/JCog_/status/1109596927123996672?s=19 …

Followup since this is gaining some traction and I'm still curious. How do you feel about general follower alerts that are silent and don't name you specifically? i.e. "Thanks for the follow!"

Is it split? It's only bad if someone has an issue with it right? Isn't indifferent still a favorable judgement for streamers who use em?

I guess that's a fair way to look at it. My reasoning was that people who are indifferent don't care, so among those who do, it's almost 50/50. I'd also guess it's more likely for someone to unfollow because of them than for not having them, but that's just speculation.

Also, even if it's not the majority, 1/4 new followers actively disliking something that happens when they're brand new still just seems... ill-advised to me. First impressions matter. I'll admit this one has a lot more nuance though.

It does on the other foot additionally give incentive for some people to follow as well. I also don't think, but purely an opinion, most people who dislike it will unfollow because of it because the same people would not have followed in favor of the alert.

Yeah, honestly this one is hard to know what's best. It needs a full-on scientific study. 😂

I do know that I've done with and without follower alerts many times over the last 7 years and they undoubtedly make a difference. I recently reenabled them and the numbers reflected immediately. Impossible to say it actually impacts growth though in terms of viewership.
