What emulator are you using? If you're using ZSNES, you can disable each individual Music Channel as you please.

This doesn't give me the desired solution. It cuts out the sound effects I'd like to preserve.

I'm pretty sure at least some emulators let you disable audio channels, but I'm not sure which ones have the feature.

This isn't really a solution since it disables just specific instruments and it's not as cut and dry as "this is for sound effects, this is for the background track"

I'm not home right now, but you can maybe try using addmusick to insert a blank template song (https://bin.smwcentral.net/u/17183/TEMPLATE.txt … ) to the ROM, then use Lunar Magic to insert the blank song into the levels you want? A little complicated but it should be a valid solution
