Do you know what breaks my heart every time? Meeting a single mother working full time who is homeless because she can’t afford to pay rent in Los Angeles earning $15.50 an hour. More than 70% of single mothers are rent burdened—the housing crisis is a women’s issue.

This is why we are focused on solutions to homelessness, housing people can afford, and good jobs - it’s all connected and we need holistic approaches to solving homelessness.

This is also personal to me. As someone who received a second chance at succeeding in life, I know how different my life could have turned out if I didn’t have access to educational opportunities and a path to citizenship. Everyone deserves a second chance.

At this time of crisis in Los Angeles organizations like Chrysalis are of vital importance helping homeless and poverty-stricken individuals back into the workforce. We can end poverty and homelessness if enough people decide they want to and I am putting my best foot forward.

Some personal news: I’m thrilled to announce that I’ll be joining the amazing team at Chrysalis in Los Angeles as a Development Director. While the mission to elect more moms continues, working with local campaigns in 2022 underscored the urgent need to help my community.

On the 30th anniversary of the Family Medical Leave Act, uplifting the words of : “It is unacceptable that 1 in 4 women living in the US returns to work within two weeks of giving birth.” As a mom, I know this is acceptable. More on #PaidLeave 👇🏼

The FMLA, which has its 30th anniversary today, ensures that most workers are able to receive 12 weeks of unpaid leave to care for a new child or sick family member. The bill, however, doesn’t apply to the 44% of workers and millions of workers cannot afford to take unpaid leave.

“It's about being a country where women and all people can both work and raise a family. How can we compete in a global economy of millions of American parents, especially moms, can't join the workforce?”

There is nowhere in this country where a full-time worker paid the federal minimum wage of $7.25 can make ends meet — and yet many restaurant workers are paid a sub-minimum wage of just $2.13 an hour. Totally absurd. It's time to end starvation wages for tipped workers.

Exxon Mobil, Chevron, BP, Shell and TotalEnergies are reporting a record smashing combined profit of $190 billion for 2022. Eliminate unnecessary subsidies and fund policies families long deserved. Congress needs to find the moral courage to fight for people over profits.

The Build Back Better Act, would establish paid leave for workers. The program would cost about $20 billion a year. Instead of families, oil companies receive $20 billion a year in federal subsidies. We have the funds to help families and Congress has the power to change this.

“It all started by writing down some ideas while standing at her kitchen counter. She wasn’t in a swanky office. She’s not an established politician. She didn’t have millions of dollars of funding. She’s just a mom with an idea and the fire within to make it happen.”

"It's not a bipartisan issue. Prioritizing young children is a good thing." Absolutely. The brain development that occurs in the first 5 years—1 million neural connections per second—will never be matched later in life. It's a beautiful, critical window.

4 years ago, nobody believed that a single working mom can fundraise and succeed in the political space. I didn’t get the naysayers get in the way because I knew how much the work was needed. Don’t get anything get in the way, speak from your heart and keep the faith.

While I have some personal news to share soon, the work at #momsinoffice will continue. We are so excited to build our CA state PAC in addition to our federal PAC to elect more women in CA. Our goal is also to bring moms together and giving candidates a space to to connect.

Flashback to 01/2019 when I was trying to figure out how to fundraise and help moms in politics. For the 2022 election cycle, we received over 5,000 donations and raised close to $200k to help elect moms up and down the ballot and fight gender bias in politics. 4 years 🎂🙏

This report confirms what we all know: child care is out of reach for too many families. That’s why we need universal child care.
