      2. At issue is whether ideologically shaped or directed violence warrants the label of 'terrorism'. Often people seem reluctant to use the label for violence suffused by right-wing, misogynist, or racist views, but very quick to apply it to violence by people of colour or Muslims

      3. Should we combat hypocrisy or inconsistency in calling stuff terrorism by being equally quick/broad in applying the label to 'white/right' violence? The answer is no. This will backfire. Let me explain why.

      4. 'Terrorism' performs certain ethical and political work. When we agree that something is terrorism, we are calling it essentially bad and we are justifying/demanding violent interventions to stop it from happening. So far so good for white/right violence, though, right?

      5. The thing is, while most white/right extremist communities glorify and incite violence, that violence is often supposed to be expressive, cathartic, and ultimately about the perpetrator's personal assertion of power. Yes this is inherently political. But...

      6. ...this form of violence does not display the strategic forethought or political calculation normally characteristic of a campaign of terrorist acts. Calling it terrorism thus broadens the term from its historic roots to cover any violence by the disaffected or radical.

      7. While this might mean some action against white/right extremism, the likely result will be that the term 'terrorism' is applied with even greater freedom to any violence by people of colour, Muslims, left-wing dissidents, regardless of its political purpose.

      8. Listen, 'terrorism' as a label is about sending in the cossacks. Yes, sometimes we want the cossacks--the FBI interrupts a lot of far-right plots. But don't forget who the cossacks work for.

      9. A better response to overuse of the term 'terrorism' is to cautious and narrow with its use. Absent evidence of strategic, insurgent intent by an attacker, find another word. Violence can be ideological, bigoted, hateful, and still not strategic or calculated.

      10. My definition of terrorism is acts of violence intended to influence the political behaviour of an audience, typically to intimidate, inspire, or provoke (depending on the audience). I have other words for acts that don't meet these conditions--hate crime, bigoted violence...

"acts of violence intended to influence the political behaviour of an audience, typically to intimidate, inspire, or provoke (depending on the audience)." It's not clear here whether you think it applies to Minassian. Nu?pic.twitter.com/roceYucF7N

I don't think this Facebook post is conclusive either way, given what I know about the incel community and what this might mean.

You mean, the incel community isn't enough of an organized political/paramilitary org (like Da'esh or whatever)? Thus members who do violence in the hopes of furthering its amorphous, yet largely coherent misogynist political agenda, might not be performing "terrorism?" Right?

It's more that, from what I understand, it is not unified behind a programme of political change. It's not really a movement/org. So I'm not yet sure whether this is an act of personal vengeance or expression, or an attempt to effect institutional change.

Ah, okay. That's fair. I tend to think the extreme-misogynists, call them the, 'alt-misogynists,' if you will, are seeking political & inst'l change (I take calls for state-assigned "girlfriends" seriously), but I can see how this point would be a bit of a judgement call and YMMV

Once performative violence is being used to manipulate policy arrangements, I'm pretty comfortable calling it terrorism, because at that point it is analytically helpful to understand what they're doing as such, compared to resentful but non-programmatic violence.

Yeah, see I think the performative violence *is* being used by the alt-misogyists to both attempt to manipulate policy & also recruit people to their cause and intimidate/scare women out of the public and political sphere. I'm fine with your criteria/definition.

Certainly in some cases. It's helpful to approach Elliot Rodger as a terrorist. I'm less sure what to make of Minassian. There's some variation in how well defined the political aspirations of these online misogynist communities are, from what I can tell.
