So much of programming flame wars: "This is not what I am used to/not how I was taught to think. Therefore it is bad and you should feel bad." "Here is how you can think about it and therefore do it." "I prefer not to change my established thinking. Your language is bad."

We have "open up a ticket with appropriate team and somebody will take care of it" as an option, too, but the closer you can push your systems to making just fixing the thing faster and more reliable than filling out the ticket, the more often you'll incent people to do that.

All abstractions leak because things need to be debugged.

That doesn't make her radical--it makes her far more realistic, in any meaningful sense of the word, than those who think we still have room for politically easier, less robust approaches. That's not 'realism,' that's the opposite: a kind of pleasant fantasy

I'm not one to nitpick. Hold up. This figure is totally wrong! As a banana aficionado and ex-container ship bod, I think I may comment.

Maybe when I was younger this was less true. But doing things I haven't done before is what made me who I am today. Developers are constant learners and system change agents by definition. "put yourself in a box" is not the way to start a relationship.

Fewer ideas have been more powerful than GTD’s “actions to move this project forward” idea. It feels like I’m hardwired to think in outcomes, but I’m only ever capable of performing actions. You don’t need to go to the doctor, you need to schedule an appointment.

The potential for you as an engineer to know things about your systems that your colleagues (even those on your team, who you've worked alongside for a long time) don't know is higher than many think.

P.S. I’m getting questions and I can’t really see them all because twitter doesn’t load everything right now. I’ve gotten a few variations on “until what age should this be a thing?”. The answer is: until all ages. Forever. For you too, adults. For everyone. Play.

Designers are pushing each other to learn more about business, which is a great. But, keep in mind that you don't need to need an MBA or an economics degree to ask "How does my organization make money?" and work backwards from there to learn how most decisions are made. 💸

me talking to a student about software engineering: yeah TDD is great, love rigorous testing, yup me at work: i write my code and then i write the test and then i get suspicious when the test passes so i comment out my old code to check that the test fails and then i feel ok
