      1) Modern Europe – liberal, democratic Europe – is the United States’ creation. This story was once known to every American, but as the generation responsible for this achievement dies, so too has the knowledge ceased to be passed down casually, within families.

I think Britain, Canada, Australia, India, Africa, New Zealand & The Soviet Union also played a big part in shaping post war Europe. Slightly one sided to say it was all the US. Big part yes but not the only player. Ps UK and France are nuclear powers.

Churchill was booted out of office in 1945 along with all his plans. The incoming labor government looked inwards again. Britain’s influence in the political settlement was much squandered. The dominions had little say in it. It was, essentially, an American project.

It was Robert Schuman, a French National who had bigger influence regarding European Unity with the establishment of the European Coal & Steel Community. This led eventually to the EU today. An American project I’m not sure. American money yes was vital but not the only factor.

And I suppose democracy is an American ideal if you choose to ignore that both UK and France were already established democracies. I suppose it harks back to the US thinking the UK was still ruled via a king dictatorship during 1774.
