Wow, January 2020 was the warmest on record and greater than 3°C above the 1981-2010 climate average in Europe. The average global temperature was also the highest on record. 🔥 More info ():

Looking forward to my talk this evening. Although is making my heart ache looking back at what was such an incredible spell of winter weather!

It would also provide the environment for rapid eastbound transatlantic flights - though potentially quite turbulent, too.

Whether or not it produces the monster bomb cyclone for the British Isles that's been in several model runs, this highly baroclinic environment over the Atlantic on the 9th is primed and ready for something to go off 💣

An extremely +ve NAM/AO event incoming, projected to peak ~Feb 10th. It is characterised by: (a) an increased poleward height gradient (b) poleward-shifted storm tracks (c) well-separated eddy-driven & sub-tropical jets in the zonal-mean.

As a stratosphere scientist, I’m often thinking about the Ural High, and since today is the here’s a really superb owl that links the two — the Ural Owl (pic from Wikipedia)

For all those wondering why the 'Medieval Warm Period' does not look warm, it is because the evidence suggests it was NOT a globally coherent event. Please update your understanding. (See: or )

Incredible snapshot from this morning where Europe and much of North America simultaneously bask in extreme winter warmth.

We should be very concerned that we’re attaining this level of global warmth without the aid of a Super El Niño. That’s more the headline here than the overall rank. It’s almost as if something has... changed...

I should add that the site was moved in January 1968 from the slightly warmer London Road location, so it's possible that the earlier years would have had more frosts had the recording been at the current Whiteknights location.

For the first time on record, we had January when Oslo, Stockholm, Helsinki and Copenhagen were above freezing (0°C) every day of the month. In addition, all but Oslo were totally snow-free. Satellite image on 22 Jan 2020.
