No announcement of new COP president. No explanation of sacking Claire O’Neill. No announcement on ban date for petrol/diesel cars - even though that was briefed in advance. Media wondering why we were here.

    1. This is an obvious prediction, but I want to get it on record. The GOP just released Trump from any accountability for trying to cheat in the upcoming election. That's one sign of many that they are going to try to rig the election, in a range of illegal & semi-legal ways.

Under-appreciated fact of academic life, there is a lot of rejection, grant proposals, papers, and even my own hypotheses seem to reject me most of the time!

It’s World Wetlands Day, and I’m in the Cuvette Centrale, in the center of the Congo Basin, the world’s second largest tropical wetland, and since 2017 known as home to the world’s largest tropical peatland complex. Here on fieldwork to learn more about the peatlands.

This is *such* bad news. Claire Perry O’Neill has been attending COPs for several years. She seemed to me to be gearing up to bring some of the same kind of energy brought by Christiana Figueres as exec secretary in 2015.

I haven’t read it. But shocking if no mention of natural regeneration and rewilding. What ever happened to climate adaptation?

The River levels are very high for this time of year, here from last weeks trip on the Ikelemba River are submerged houses. In a days boat ride (180 km) we only saw two spots of dry land.

Great Conference on Congo’s peatlands at Mbandaka Uni yesterday. Now off up the Congo River, where will lead a team exploring new areas of peatland for the next 8 weeks. Including what we think may be a new type of tropical peatland for central Congo.
