You continue to work and they go on their way. As time goes by you continue to help changing tires on your walk to work. But it is now becoming more common. You help several people on both your walk to work and your walk home.

However these people need help, they dont know how to change a tire, and now you are getting fairly proficient at it. This continues and the number of people needing help doesnt decrease. You have to trade some of your person time, or work fewer hours to be able to help them.

Given you only have limited time, you decide to only help a few. These few are still grateful, but the others you dont help are disappointed and unhappy. Some ask multiple times for help others even abuse you "What do you mean you cant help", "Fine dont help then".

Perhaps the problem here is people not knowing how to change a tire. You decide to instead of helping people change a tire, teach them how. This takes significantly more time, so you only have enough time to help one person a week. And have to refuse help to more people.

Over time the number of people asking for help does not seem to reduce. You try to teach more people by putting up some signs that explain how to change a tire. The number of people asking for help does not decrease.

When you point to the sign, some seem surprised by it existence, some ask you to help them anyway since it would be faster than them reading the sign, some abuse you for not making the sign bigger.

So you go back to only helping a few people when you have time. When others ask why you cant help you explain the above. That still takes to much time. So you print out some pamphlets "why i dont have time to help...".

This works for some interactions, but many others seem annoyed "what kind of asshole takes the time to print 'i wont help you' cards" Perhaps if you charged a small amount of money for helping these people, then you could help all of them.

This fails miserably, most people are angry when you ask for money, even people who are happy to pay dont carry cash or there is some other complexity. Some people you help are actually driving for work.

They would be happy to get their employer to pay you for your time, but explains that the process and bureaucracy around this means they will not go to the effort.

Now you catch the bus to work This is effectively being an Open Source maintainer, except all the people who need help (and who you dont help) have your email address.
