is there any non-correlational evidence that obesity is unhealthy?

what's your standard for non-correlational? I'd first think about how gastric baypass lowers death rates relative to controls, and second about mendelian randomization of BMI increasing variants

links? i just read about mendelian randomization and it sounds shady as shit tbh; like way too many assumptions about our knowledge of biological mechanisms to take it seriously.... am i wrong?

take https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5055056/ … or https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMoa066603 … for example. not RCTs, but could try and search for some in this surgery in the latter you'd see confounds going on the opposite direction: after gastric bypass they have *more* mortality due to accidents and suicide...

yet cancer and diabetes (as would be expected from genetic methods) go down, togehter with coronary artery disease (all expected from what we'd guess fromw hat we know about physiology/pathology. that has failed us before! but other evidence is consistent in that direction)

link 1: no RCTs link 2: not an RCT. yes the effect size is huge, which is suggestive -- and this moves my prior a bit -- but case control on age, sex, and BMI is barely better than just correlational evidence imo.

I mean, it's almost certain that people who choose to have this surgery are systematically different from those who don't, even controlling for age, sex, and BMI, right?

I just don't understand why not a single person has pointed me to an RCT that would look at the effect on mortality

well in my case the problem is:all the real RCTs I find are comparing different surgeries, not one is about non-surgical controls. I'm still searching, but I wonder to what extent rejection of these could be because of"ethical"concerns. If I find one(or one is done later)I'll @ you
