I don’t want to become a reactionary but there is like something really wrong with the internet re: amplification of really bad ideas (hate groups)

Facebook, Reddit, Twitter, YouTube, all focused on lowering the barrier to entry so they could get as many users as possible and make as much money off them as they could.

But they grew so fast, and nobody running the showreally cared about moderation. So hate groups proliferate and now it’s becoming a Real Problem when it bleeds out to real life

Online is real. People who dismiss cyber bullying and trolling either just don’t understand it, or are part of it and being disingenuous. When someone’s reputation at school gets trashed by a bully on Facebook, that’s real. You can’t just turn off the monitor and walk away

Contrast with smaller forums that aren’t trying to be everything for everyone. Volunteer moderators can keep harassment down, for the most part

I’m calling out Something Awful in particular here, but there’s a reason I’m still a member 10 years running. Nowhere else I know has such a consistently great sense of community
