It's hard sometimes to grasp a man like Trump. Decent people habitually give others the benefit of the doubt. It's hard to grasp when a man like that is willfully doing the worst things imaginable, because he wants to do harm.

Great point that I hadn't thought about. There are certainly people still instinctively giving Trump the benefit of the doubt because they are decent people themselves. Maddening for those of us who saw through him a long time ago, but true!

The adjective “decent” may, perhaps, be used to describe these people, but the adjective “naive” may be more appropriate in this situation.

Oh, that's interesting. I liked Reagan but was pretty young at the time. So that's based more on "feeling" than policy or substance, iykwim.

I'm always fascinated by the various positive takes on Reagan. My first presidential vote was in 84 and I didn't get the appeal then either!

I met him by chance once. He defied his security to walk over and talk to my then 8 yr old daughter. Even stooped to her level, eye to eye.

I that. Decent, honorable presidents. I feel like that's something I've very much taken for granted up 'til now.

I agree. I was not in agreement wit W but greatly admire that his daughters contribute to society. Says a lot about him.

A decent statesman who understands how politics, public relations and perception work? This seems like such a distant memory.
