“I have a flaw; I love womanizing.” Mencius replied, “King Tai loved women…in his house, there were no dissatisfied women; outside, there were no unmarried men. If your Majesty loves beauty, and lets the people be able to gratify the same feeling, what difficulty is there?”

You’re basically admitting that the actually indigenous, wealthier and better connected members of your base don’t have the gumption to do anything, and left passively cheering whatever mercenaries happen to show up.

To be clear, it wasn’t that hard. Just talked to the organizers and started helping out at the first couple events post covid. Didn’t take a big commitment, just consistency and being a little sociable.

I’ve happened to get to know a few local restaurant owners socially, but that came from deliberate sustained involvement in community organizations. Not by literally trying to order friendship off a menu.

A friend did, in a sense, become a regular at a place, to the point of having a bespoke sandwich combination ready at his beck and call. But that’s it, he just got a more convenient sandwich order. Which is just fine, for what it is!

There’s something very telling about the fantasy that friendship can be easily bought as a financial transaction by living the same comfortable eating-out life that you already were doing.

you have to be regular-maxxing. you've gotta pick a random restaurant and decide you own it. it doesn't matter if its good, its yours. twice a week, you're there. work dinner? you're hosting. date night? no question. they've always got a table for you.

The politically most popular outcome of the social media/depression moral panic is to restrict teens from using their phones, but keep up the same academic/extracurricular demands and safetyism that prevent them from having normal childhoods. Then claim we fixed it.

There’s something really strange about the notion that identity is something you can create yourself, rather than a fact on the ground about who you are and what your social relations are.

Can’t help but notice that the evidence for “social media causes teen depression” is flimsier than the case for “online dating ruins dating,” but it is more popular to talk about taking social media away from teens than deleting Tinder from men and women’s phones.

The 器 in 君子不器 is used in modern Chinese in 机器 "machine." Thus, an anachronistic but striking translation might be: "Thou shalt not make a human mind in the likeness of a machine" New ideology: reverse Butlerian Jihad.

Iirc the admonition is to avoid public life not during chaos like war or natural disasters, but specifically when the government has become corrupt, and your participation could only either compromise yourself or prop up a failing system. Echoes of Galt's Gulch.

Hot take. This Confucian pompousness about not going into office in chaotic times, only in peaceful eras, is purely and simply selfish escapism. A legalist would say: go into office ESPECIALLY in chaotic times and turn chaos into order. What else a role might an official have?

The resilience of the affluent knowledge-worker Zoom class arrangement this year has been a QoL cushion, but is also an indicator of complacency. Important forms of coordination and real world production can't happen on Zoom, but white collar jobs programs can operate unimpeded.
