Howard Hawks was a conspicuous absence from the #SightAndSoundPoll Top 100, but four of his films were just a handful of votes from hitting that milestone
=101st: Rio Bravo
=108th: Bringing Up Baby
=122nd: Only Angels Have Wings
=129th: His Girl Friday

Shortly before the release of what was to be his final film, Rio Lobo, Howard Hawks regaled a crowd with anecdotes and advice from almost 50 years in Hollywood (S&S, Spring 1971)

Hawks is one of Hollywood’s greatest & most successful directors Hard to scale those twin peaks . There were some astonishing absentees which I have mentioned before but Hawks is certainly one of the most prominent imo

IMO HH suffers from having made too many good films. Spread himself too thin. The four listed are awesome, but what about The Big Sleep, Red River, Ball of Fire (thanks for that last one), plus others no doubt.

Kids, if your top 100 leaves out
Bringing up baby, 20th century, his girl friday, and the big sleep,
It isn’t the top 100.

Surprised no showing for 'The Big Sleep' there, though nice to see 'His Girl Friday'.
