More good news! Another one of our top legislative priorities passed the Senate yesterday! HB 1110 allows more "missing middle" affordable, climate-friendly housing in cities and neighborhoods and is a major victory for working people and the environment. #waleg

In our statement we emphasize that whatever station locations are chosen, *all* levels of government must do more to protect against displacement and gentrification in the CID, and we offer specific strategies that might help in that work.

Sprawl is fossil fuel infrastructure. Like a freeway lane or a pipeline or an export facility! Let's stop mandating sprawl and its decades of human and environmental harm in our city zoning laws!

"If you are standing in the way of policies that allow more homes in our cities, it’s time to turn in your environmentalist bona fides. Seriously. If you’re blocking infill housing, you might as well start burning coal in your yard." -@kcgatlarge seattletimes.com/opinion/housin

Exceptionally proud of the support of environmental orgs for HB 1110. 🙌 The intersectionality of land use and climate compels us to address both. 🌍 🏘️ 🚌

We're ecstatic that HB 1110 has passed the State House! Housing policy is climate policy, and missing middle housing is crucial to tackling the climate crisis. We urge the State Senate to quickly pass the bill without any amendments to water it down. #Homes4WA

The report also reminds us that our urban forest is inequitably distributed. We saw during the awful heat wave in 2021 that many neighborhoods lacked the shade that tall trees provide. The city needs to tackle this, starting with the right-of-way it already owns. /end

We've lost untold amounts of forests across Western Washington due to sprawl. When forests are cut down for subdivisions people drive to and from, it contributed greatly to the climate crisis. Urban trees and urban homes help protect the other forests that remain. 3/

Data also shows new housing is *not* fueling tree canopy loss. Nevertheless, the city should take steps to harmonize its tree and housing policies so they work together to ensure we have healthy urban forests and more urban housing. Both are key for tackling climate crisis. 2/

A healthy urban forest is important for our climate and our environment. New data from the city suggests we're losing trees primarily in parks and greenbelts as older non-native trees age out -- and as heat and drought stress our great evergreens. 1/

"Many Seattle residents know this all too well — their garbage trucks read “Breathe Clean, Seattle: Powered by Renewable Natural Gas.” But data uncovered by Gas Leaks shows that it’s highly unlikely the trucks are running on anything other than conventional methane gas."

BREAKING: Today Gas Leaks joined @SierraClubWASt @350seattle & @breachcollectiv in calling for an investigation into "renewable natural gas" ads on the side of Waste Management garbage trucks in Seattle. gasleaks.org/seattles-garba

Have you turned in your ballot yet? You have until 8PM to get it to a dropbox. We urge a YES vote on I-135 to help bring more affordable, dense housing to Seattle. It's good for the climate. It's good for people. Get your votes in today!

Our official rebuttal to all of the false claims made by in their endorsement piece about I-135. We've included all the research they forgot to do: publicola.com/2023/01/24/don

I-135 would create a new quasi-government Seattle entity to provide housing. As it stands, I-135 has no funding and no accountability for public dollars. st.news/3kyj8Ie

We're thrilled to have the endorsement of a leader in the movement for a safer, cleaner, + adaptable environment! Housing policy=climate policy& building green social housing 4 all promotes climate justice for low-middle income residents who face the worst impacts of the crisis

We're endorsing a YES vote on Initiative 135 on Seattle's Feb. 14 ballot! Housing policy is climate policy, and building publicly owned and operated social housing in our city is a crucial part of the wider solution to the housing and climate crisis. cc: @houseRneighbors
