Housemate just started a chip pan fire while we were outside the kitchen. Turns out we don't have a fire alarm downstairs... His way of dealing with it was to throw it outside into the garden. I feel so safe.

If it was a grease/oil fire that's the safest thing you can do. Throwing water on these types of fires actually just causes the fuel to splash and catch fire to whatever it lands on.
