AND how enthralling/time-consuming they are versus that reward. I think there are many positives to gaming, but if I hadn't "made it" then I would want a LOT of those hours back playing TF2 to do something more fulfilling.

Everyone is taking JRogan's comment as "waste of time" meaning "can't get you a career". That's not really the point. The argument is whether gaming is a better spend of your free time than other hobbies, like sports, reading, learning, socialising, etc.

Obviously there's more to this argument than just "do what makes you happy!" if you care about personal development over hedonism at all.

I think if you game only for 1 hour a day like the average person, you can categorically say its a waste of time. That's not enough time to get immersed into the community and there's probably more important parts of your life that could use that time.

You could make the same case for every hobby. One hour is nothing, humans need to depress and games are great for that.

It is if you enjoy it more. For example if I hated sports why would I play sports just cause it’s supposed to be a better spending of free time. It’s all subjective. I could play basketball for years and never make it pro, does that mean I wasted time putting a ball in a basket?

Yeah, I heard someone bring up that Rogan also at one point had what was basically a serious addiction to Quake, and so his own personal history with gaming is obviously a big influence on what he's saying.
