The balancing around GOATs in 2019 absolutely ruined the community perception of "metas". There were AMAZING metas in the past that spanned multiple months that were not detrimental to the viewing experience. There were also AWESOME moments in GOATs, it just lasted too long.

The common fan outlook that it's either: a) one week metas with hero pools or b) a meta that lasts the entire year just doesn't hold up historically since 2016. I fundamentally believe that balancing CAN achieve this happy medium.

to play devil's advocate moth meta dive lasted for around a year previously before that it just had variation in the dps lineup while the supports/tanks stayed mostly the same

waaait a second, no no no that's not right Moth meta was from October 2017 until February 2018 That's one month of tournaments at the end of a year and then one month of tournaments at the beginning of a year. Unless you mean "mercy being viable" but that's not the same at all

between stages 1-3 virtually all the teams had the same functional hero core of tanks and supports which define the game far more than DPS (generally not always mind you) dive tanks, mercy zen was almost exclusively played stage we started seeing double sniper and orisa

If you think that Stages 1, 2, and 3 of 2018 were the same meta then we just think about the game differently. They were very very different strategically and for viewers and in NO WAY similar to GOATs / double shield mei mccree being run in every match on every map.

there were only two different playstyles in the entire league for 3 stages dive anti-dive both built around the same tanks and supports

Could counter with the MANY comps and styles that were played in 2018 but I think that's missing the point. The argument is about what defines a stagnant meta. Having the same support line neither makes a "meta" nor makes it boring. Having the same 5/6 heroes & PLAYSTYLE does.

Running Lucio Moira on both dive and rush doesn't make it the same meta AT ALL. Running a variety of DPS/support comps that all just barrel into you with a Mei wall DOES make it the same meta.

but if you play lucio moira winston dva on both styles of comp its not about 2/6 its about the 4/6 they are the same comp unless you're playing some wacky dps line up that doesnt align with that set of tanks and supports

Does that mean you think that Winston GOATs is the same as dive? Or pirate ship is the same as doom reaper? They have 4/6 of the same heroes. It's not a good definition. 2 new DPS can change the feel entirely, as can tanks. Supports to be fair are a bit more up in the air.

I can't really think of any composition where changing the supports significantly affects how the comp is played. But I really do think that changing either the tankline or the DPS line can make a big shift for viewers and teams.

I think playing Beyblade without Ana makes it awkward
