The balancing around GOATs in 2019 absolutely ruined the community perception of "metas". There were AMAZING metas in the past that spanned multiple months that were not detrimental to the viewing experience. There were also AWESOME moments in GOATs, it just lasted too long.

The common fan outlook that it's either: a) one week metas with hero pools or b) a meta that lasts the entire year just doesn't hold up historically since 2016. I fundamentally believe that balancing CAN achieve this happy medium.

to play devil's advocate moth meta dive lasted for around a year previously before that it just had variation in the dps lineup while the supports/tanks stayed mostly the same

waaait a second, no no no that's not right Moth meta was from October 2017 until February 2018 That's one month of tournaments at the end of a year and then one month of tournaments at the beginning of a year. Unless you mean "mercy being viable" but that's not the same at all

between stages 1-3 virtually all the teams had the same functional hero core of tanks and supports which define the game far more than DPS (generally not always mind you) dive tanks, mercy zen was almost exclusively played stage we started seeing double sniper and orisa

If you think that Stages 1, 2, and 3 of 2018 were the same meta then we just think about the game differently. They were very very different strategically and for viewers and in NO WAY similar to GOATs / double shield mei mccree being run in every match on every map.

there were only two different playstyles in the entire league for 3 stages dive anti-dive both built around the same tanks and supports

Could counter with the MANY comps and styles that were played in 2018 but I think that's missing the point. The argument is about what defines a stagnant meta. Having the same support line neither makes a "meta" nor makes it boring. Having the same 5/6 heroes & PLAYSTYLE does.

so is 5 or 6 heroes the threshold because season 1 it was 4/6 so if 5 is required then you got me there i also dont think most teams playstyles were that different considering if 2/3 of the roster and win conditions are the same it comes down to execution

Very different playstyles between junkrat/widow, widow/tracer, genji/tracer, pharah/tracer especially because this idea of Mercy being played constantly in 2018 is actually untrue, stage 2 saw VERY little Mercy play, was mostly zen lucio so even the 4 hero thing is just wrong

the lucio zen stage 2 is super fair i forgot but once again i stand by that tanks and supports define what a meta are far more than the dps picks because it defines the entire tempo of the game i think its a super interesting topic though and im interested to see more opinions

I think the fact that we’ve just been cycling through rush metas makes it seem like the meta isn’t changing. Because each rush meta will essentially play the same, switching from one to another doesn’t feel like an actual meta shift or that the games any different
