@SideshowGaming watching your vid on hero bans. Just wanted to add that Siege, which only has hero bans and not picks, and a banned hero goes for both teams, does have a ban meta. Maybe doesn’t change your opinion but seems to be contrary to your explanation

Do they ban for the match/map or just on attack/defense? That makes a huge difference. I think specific attack/defence bans in Overwatch would make a ban meta incredibly likely.

Per map, a team gets one attack ban and one defence ban. Applied to both teams. Some people (cc @INTERRO) would like to see the attack/defence rule dropped and just have ‘open’ bans

Yeah, I think that makes sense though. Attack and defense often require completely different strategies and heroes. Since they are often not mirror battles, specific bans for each would be far more impactful.

I do agree, but I also believe that hero bans in Overwatch without hero picks would result in a ban meta. Even though the Siege system is slightly different, it still has strong trends of certain heroes being consistently banned, even if the banning team would succeed with them

Obviously in turn that shifts the meta and leads the ban meta to change as well - if people stop scrimming with a hero because it's banned so frequently, eventually the hero will stop getting banned. Not sure whether I agree or disagree with banning in ow, but interesting still.

I could see a situation where this happens but only if a certain hero defines the usual composition (say, Hanzo, way more than he does currently) and the most default first move is to ban the Hanzo if you think your team's is worse.

Then the teams with good Hanzos get so used to that happening, they figure out the meta without Hanzo and know exactly what they want to ban each time. But the initial premise of a defining hero has to be hit first.

Generally, I don't think the meta after each initial hero ban will be "solved" because there won't be an obvious first hero to ban each time.

I'm thinking more along the lines of, let's say this happened in GOATs era and Brig and Zarya were the constant bans. I think that would have caused a fairly fast meta turnover because the fastest to adapt would be the most successful.

But I do also agree that in most cases there won't always be a definite hero to ban. In my opinion that makes things kind of interesting, especially if you do it per map. But whether it would actually improve Overwatch, I don't know. I am curious to see though.
