Long shot but here goes. Any followers familiar with wireless lav mics? If so, are setups under $500 worth using, or is it a much larger investment?

if it's for a recorded show I would recommend just using a regular lav and tape the cable to your back with medical tape. get a decent audio recorder, Zoom H1n for example.

the recorded stuff isn't in a studio, it definitely has to be wireless. I already own lav mics with long cables.

Thats why you get the Audio Recorder. You just put that in your pocket and it records and stores all your audio footage, then you transfer the files to your PC and sync them to your video footage. Zero cable restrictions in terms of where you can go.

Perhaps that is the play... I'm concerned about giving the setup to guests and them fucking the recorder up or pressing stop in their pockets or some shit idk.

Again, I recommend the Zoom H1n as your go-to audio recorder. I use it in my work as a freelance videographer and it's basically idiot proof. Best 90 bucks you can spend towards audio.

I actually already have one. I would need another though since we'd have 2 people at once.
