    The original sins of tech 'addiction' were committed in 1990s but almost all work since (save perhaps the current crop of ECRs), have aggravated the damage its exponents have done to public understanding of technology & global health policy. ⬇ lays it out here ⬇

    Yet another low-quality technology 'addiction' paper is doing the rounds today. It's a shame didn't include 's expert reactions in their coverage.

    10-item scale - each rating from 1 (strongly disagree) to 6 (strongly agree). You’re deemed a "smartphone addict" if you score >31 (male) or >33 (female) i.e. just over 3 per question i.e. halfway between disagree and agree. Am I missing something?

    I'm reliably informed that "causal inference" has just overtaken "my priors" as the go-to phrase used by bloggers, newsletter writers and other dilettantes to try and signal their membership in the intellectual "elite".

    Academia often feels like (in my experience), a series of failures, rejections, & disappointments. This is offset by learning a student got a dream job or extended a thesis into an OA peer-reviewed paper!!! thank you for making my day !

    It's amazing how few people understand this important distinction. Facebook gets punished for actually being extremely proactive (in a good way) in reporting CSAM to NCMEC. (Same, to a lesser extent, of Google reporting how many DMCA takedowns it gets)

    Alternative headline: Facebook detects and reports a lot more CSAM than other platforms
