A tweetstorm on why conferences should NOT extend deadlines. It's unprofessional and disruptive and not always a joyful thing. Here's why, from my lived experience (not just abstract reasoning).

  2. Just for one day, it's nice to not wonder "Am I looking at a US date or a European/Indian/… one?" It's like the -40° of dates. (Ignores side-eye he gets from the Réaumur scale.) But 💯 on ISO dates.

I feel like a lot of US citizens don’t quite get how hard it is to get an immigrant visa even if you are super qualified—many friends/family have struggled w the H1-B lottery or spent months applying for an O1 or got denied entry even though they have MIT degrees/great jobs/etc

"It depends" sounds too wishy washy and is not a great conversation starter/continuer. For the same semantics but a much better outcome, just ask "When?" There's almost always a when-to and when-not-to. Everyone learns more from the when discussion.

Hey all you artists working in the digital medium: I am a software developer currently employed at an art museum, and we frequently put digital art in our galleries. Some of it is new. Some of it is decades old now. I have some opinions…

I just had the flu & well, , so: a thread on viruses. They're AMAZING. First? There’s a lot of ‘em. If you lined up all the 10^31 viruses on earth end to end, they’d stretch 100 million light years, enough to cross the Virgo supercluster of galaxies.

Decades ago, when I got my first job as a dev in New Jersey, (Exit 109, GSP) there was hardly anybody around who looked like me. Now? there's plenty guys on high who are bald, brown, and sloppily dressed, who even went to the same schools I did. I think it's kinda cool.

What a story. History is littered with amazing C-graded projects. (Worth remembering if you've just handed out grades.)

Forget that. Where's the graph for "made its employees tolerable to talk to"? He's even higher on that chart.

One of the dangers of making abstract sculpture is that you compete with, and lose to, things that are not even even intended to be art.

I've seen several of these OLPC XOs come through at work and, aside from being a stupid white-savior type project that you'd expect from a founder of the MIT Media Lab, they were also hideously unreliable. not a single one of maybe a dozen over the years has turned on

If every freakin' device I buy now wants to be my voice assistant, I'm going to have to find another device to be the HR manager who interviews them, and yet another device to be the security guard who excorts the voice assistants I no longer need off the premesis.

I came home from the emergency department tonight to a scared daughter: D: "Mom!! Are you going to die from coronavirus?" Me: "Of course not!" D: "How do you know? They say the ER will see it first!" M: "I'm careful. I wear a mask, wash my hands, just like for the flu." . . .

I love that a famous cryptographer said (behind my back) that PL was dead, and now the crypto bubble burst while the data+ML revolution is increasingly sitting on PL/HPC/distsys/etc. :)
