So much is wrapped up in "did X grow over Y timeframe", where if the answer is "no" then it feels like some sort of failure. I haven't written much on the blog in months because, frankly, I don't care too. It feels like it feeds that very mentality that is exhausting me.

I love building new products. I love building our team. I love figuring out how we can be more efficient with both of those things. But I don't love feeling like I'm constantly climbing a mountain or that there's even some sort of pinnacle to reach at all.

No idea what to do with that. I've already taken time off recently and had hoped I'd come back with some renewed growth/marketing/sales gusto...but I got nothing. 10+ years of trying to get people to use various tools and focusing on all those "growth metrics" has my brain fried.

Really, as I'm typing all this out what it sounds like is I just need to hire a "growth" person to take all of that off my plate. Alas, we need to grow a bit more to afford that.

Wow, this is SUCH a relatable feeling for so many entrepreneurs I know! And not just in the SaaS industry. Any chance you'd be interested in sharing more about this with other entrepreneurs? (I know about 200k of them) Lmk!

Maybe running ads would give a better return? Content is great, but it’s not always the amount of content that makes brands great. The quality and targeting is important as well.

Paid acquisition doesn't work well for us due to all the caveats required to use the product. Have tried it quite extensively. :/
-
Have you tried remarketing using data from your site analytics? It’s one of the most targeted ways you can reach “on the fence” prospects. With that said, a healthy mix of Paid, Organic, Social, Email creates a diversified strategy.

I promise the collective Saas Founder “we” feel you so hard. Hugs and always here if you want to vent.

From what I’ve observed, you are a product person. Product people != growth people.

I stopped actively reading "startup porn" after it became clear to me that most everyone is flying by the seat of their pants and is one late client payment from missing payroll. The echo chamber often serves just to reinforce bad habits and myths. Leave it behind, trust me.

I feel ya... If it’s any comfort, just know that most other startup founders are feeling exactly the same way most of the time... occasional moments of panic or elation, against an ongoing backdrop of low-level dread :)

Ongoing backdrop of low-level dread...well said. Lol

Take a sabbatical year! Suspend access to all SaaS news, twitter, fb etc - no exception… Google “sabbatical stefan sagmeister” - some good talks&interviews with him… after reading one of them I took a sabbatical myself…

I definitely hear you! Hiring that growth person sounds like a big step for you to focus on what you love. Let them do what they do best

I'm curious, what's stopping you from unsubscribing from the whole growth thing? It seems it's supporting quite a few people already and it will continue to grow organically, albeit slower.
