For years US UK media suggested millions of Syria refugees were 'fleeing Assad'. But with Assad still in power and Syrians flocking home, BBC now quietly admits that what they were really fleeing, as usual with refugees, was a brutal (and US UK backed) warhttps://www.bbc.co.uk/news/av/world-47260450/the-syrians-returning-home-after-years-of-fleeing-war …

Yes, I was struck by the change of tone by BBC news yesterday. In a complete turnabout, with President Assad having defeated Daesh, Syrians who fled from them are now beginning to return. The BBC was reporting before that the refugees had fled from Assad's forces.

When the preferred narrative becomes unsustainable, media manage this by switching to reporting as if for years they hadn't suggested opposite. Also, UK govt (and BBC) know that UK will again have relations with Assad, which continuing to demonise him may make difficult to sell.

Funny how they have switched from Assad must go, brutal dictator, animal gassing his own people, to genuine Syrian refugees fleeing ISIS and "moderate" Al Qaida Rebels queuing to return home. Not everyone swallowed the @BBCNews propaganda thankfully.

Genocide usually strains relations with the more, image conscious.

That's sadly not true if the "image conscious" are arms dealers and the genocidal maniacs have oil.

The UK isn't like the US. They also have Saudi Arabia and the UAE as a proxy children in the region, so they have to be more conciliatory to Arab states. The US has Israel which is expressly against Arab culture ideologically so theyre still pushing this w/ Mika Brzezinski et al.

You appear to be shifting responsibility for the violence away from Assad and his Chinese, Russian backers.
