Hiya, Folks. Matt here. I'm a full-time animation student who needs to eat and pay rent and my family is not in a position to support me. If you have some extra cash and like my art please consider commissioning me or sending me a buck of two a month at

You hear people repeat these complaints but they never bring up many examples, apart from the same 1-2 lines that went viral (Kaworu and ADV's Hospital epic meme line). I wonder if these people liked Evangelion at all, or just the fake version of it in their heads.

a lot of japanese leftists used to consider manga to be garbage and there were literal book-burnings, even though the authors themselves were often leftists

A lot of people are bringing up "It's 2019!" to justify changes to Gainax and Anno's actual script, as if they were wrong to write them in the first place and should be changed to suit their personal tastes. It's all very strange.

The term used in the news broadcast was "sekuto" which comes out as "sect." In Japan, in terms of law enforcement, secuto (sect) refers to a fringe or ultra leftist faction. See this website of the Nagano Prefecture Police.

Japanese police (and the news media conveying what the police say) tend to use the term "sect" to describe violent leftist fringe groups. If you've been watching Oshii films, you might recognize the term because it comes up in the Cerberus stories.

there's no 'influx of cancerous normies', existing nerd fans of eva are the worst by a mile, it could only benefit from gaining dragonball-level popularity in the west and these guys being drowned out by honest people

"セクト" all but exclusively referred to far/new left extremist factions for like... decades. most importantly it was used in that context from 1969 to 1995.

While I am not in a position to refer specifically to the decision involved in the scene you described, in all my translation of any title, I have tried my best to be faithful to the original source material. Bar none.

This is a really crucial point that I feel a lot of people might miss. Conveying very specific moods and feelings visually is not shallow, it is the highest pursuit of visual art.

'sounds COOL' doesn't mean shallow either Evoking FEELING with just a glance, carrying it to th end, that's great storytelling! Modern mecha anime to Journey to the West, using 'COOL!' religious imagery is what Asian storytellers have done for centuries

    「ガリバーの宇宙旅行」(1965年)より。 日本、いや、世界SF映画史に記されるべきほどいかすUFOの描写。 この球形UFOの超カッコいい牽引ビームのエフェクトは誰が描いたんだろう。
