with stuff like this, it's no wonder why "conservative intellectual" seems like an oxymoron. the past isn't a thing for them to investigate; it's a ritual they want to reenact to ward off change. and if they can't do that, they'll just troll people to feel like they have control.

maybe the theory will find substance, but the sheer desire for it to be real - especially in more conservative circles - signals an effort to backfill an emotional need with a soothing myth. in reality, the origin of covid is likely just our hubris in the face of nature's chaos.

people's ongoing attachment to the lab leak theory is fascinating to me. i get it, on some level: a story about "human ambition gone awry" is more comforting than having to grapple with the complex interplay of human life, industrialism and climate change that birthed covid.

rewatched Contact and still amazed at how few movies feature an explicitly non-religious protagonist. also rare to find a film that maturely and gracefully manages that tension between reason and faith that lies at the heart of agnosticism. jodie foster is also incredible.

there are reasons for optimism, of course. enthusiasm is high among democrats, early voting is already record-breaking for midterms, and abortion has fired up a lot of female voters. but everything is so noisy that it's hard to tell where the chips will fall. we can just hope.
