Dispatchers received a call of overdue party from a concerned family member around 7pm last night. A multi-county search into the night was unsuccessful. This morning, San Miguel County Undershefiff Eric Berg, operating his personal aircraft, located truck just before 9am.

Durango to Norwood & became stuck in deep snow early yesterday AM. They tried to dig the truck out but were unsuccessful. O'night they ran engine for heat & covered themselves in furniture blankets. Early this AM they wrapped their tennis shoes w/shipping plastic & began walking.

“The family is lucky to have had moderate temperatures and our ability to use aircraft to locate them. But people need to remember that electronic GPS systems are not always the best guide. At this time of year especially, roads like these are not always passable.”

Sheriff Masters also said it’s important to have warm weather gear and extra food and water in your vehicle for emergencies such as this one.
