@MichaelBTI @fieritacatalano irrational progress in europe and US is the cause of the colonialism that ruins and sinks the congo's economy

Colonialism obviously deserves a lot of blame, but not reducible to that. Also rushed independence...
@CurarConOpinion@fieritacatalano -
... lack of institutions, cold war, Rwandan genocide, corruption, etc etc etc... Point remains same.
@CurarConOpinion@fieritacatalano -
... Problem in Congo and other poor countries is not too much progress but too little...
@CurarConOpinion@fieritacatalano -
@MichaelBTI take a look at Genuine Progress Indicator in wikipedia -
I have. I don't think it adds much beyond HDI & per cap GDP...
@RGBOURRE -
@MichaelBTI focus on increasing GDP even though increasing poverty&inequality levels show that we are experiencing growth without progress

@MichaelBTI@clairlemon So, when visiting the "Congo" is one's faith revealed to be irrational or not? -
@bluebearsoup@clairlemon hmmm not sure I understand question -
@MichaelBTI@clairlemon Just trying to point out that faith in human progress may be irrational. Progress requires commitment. -
@bluebearsoup yes, I think I agree with both statements@clairlemon -
.bluebearsoup the decision to care about humans -- or non humans. Very very important, & moral. "Rational!" No.

@MichaelBTI This seems disingenuous. He has a degree in chemistry. Be charitable: he means we need to be rational in our pursuit of progress -
He criticizes the things that are key to sparing nature, not sure how that's rational.
@ecothought -
@MichaelBTI I personally agree about the ecological utility of cities. But utility isn't the only rational value, especially for Catholics. -
I agree. I don't think rationality should be our only value either! Problem is Pope goes in opposite direction on key issues.
@ecothought -
To me
#ecomodernism means we make proactive choices about progress and take ownership of the ecological impacts of our actions@MichaelBTI -
This is more or less what the Pope is doing, even if his interventions seem a bit provincial, no?
@MichaelBTI -
In attributing env problems to greed, tech & progress, no, I don't think that's what he's doing.

@Kheithe@clairlemon yes, in 1961 people were better off in HDI terms. But no, I'm not an expert.
