  2. Seeing orphaned elephants we have rescued, raised and reintegrated return with their babies underfoot is a poignant reminder of a story come full circle. To date, we know of 35 elephant calves born to orphans we have returned to the wild:

  3. Free at last! This unlucky zebra had a snare around her left back leg, causing terrible pain. It’s an injury the SWT/KWS Mara Vet Unit has seen all too many times before – thankfully they were able to remove the trap with bolt cutters & she was soon on her way, much relieved

  4. Roses are red, violets are blue, gift an adoption and help an orphaned animal too! An adoption of an orphan , rhino or giraffe with the SWT is a meaningful gift, full of love that lasts the entire year. Find out more:

  5. Rolling about in the mud is hard work, especially if you are the world’s largest land mammal. With a determined look, a stretch here & a rocking motion there, Dololo gets there in the end! Stay up-to-date with his adventures by joining our foster family:

  6. Many of the orphans who come into our care are rescued under the most tragic circumstances. We've seen them through their darkest days, stood (& indeed, slept!) by their sides & helped them transition from our Reintegration Units to a wild life:

  8. Vet Unit to the rescue! This was treated for a sprain that was causing a limp. The SWT/KWS Tsavo Vet Unit examined him & administered painkillers & anti-inflammatories to offer relief. He’s among 100’s of injured animals we treat each year:

Swimming together en-masse like a little school of fish, It looks like the Ithumba orphans have created their own wave pool! All of the here are orphans that have lost or become separated from their mothers, most due to drought, poaching and human activities

With his ears and trunk outstretched, Sattao has his eyes firmly on the prize. Aside from milk, much of his diet comes from eating plants, shoots and roots & the quest to fill his belly consumes most of his waking day. Find out how you can adopt him:

It’s time for bed! Soft hay provides the perfect mattress while a cosy blanket provides additional warmth to the very youngest orphaned elephants in our care. Donate & ensure we can offer a nurturing environment for orphans that have lost their mothers at:

My, hasn’t she grown! This is Tamiyoi, an orphan that was rescued from a well in 2015. Back then she barely reached the Keepers' waist – now she’s nearly as tall as them and has tusks to boot:

Six years ago to the day we received a call to rescue an orphan that saved his life. We called him Kauro & he’s been a part of our herd ever since, & will remain so until he’s ready to return to the wild. You can help other orphans like Kauro:

Our conservation work is built on the principles and philosophies of David Sheldrick. He literally wrote the book on wildlife conservation and management (called: The Wilderness Guardian) & we’ve shared how his legacy lives on in the work of the SWT:

There’s no better way to start the weekend than with a picture of big flapping ears, a super-sized grin and luxuriating in a dust bath. Want elephant-news delivered direct to your inbox? Sign up to our email newsletters:
