Why are they due to be felled? Or is it simply pollarding?

Mostly due to kerb damage. Sheffield council care more about straight kerbs and smooth paths than they do about the environment.
-
They may also care more about road safety and trip hazards. I'm a Green member, but it's "plants first" fluff that gives us a bad name!

Tree felling nothing to do with road safety, but all to do with

Interesting!

Absolutely! There are solutions
@Ameyplc could use that could ensure safe pavements and mature trees with all their health benefits.

@SheffCouncil what's the other side to this story? -
Sheff council argue they are replacing the trees with species which are easier to care for. They don't appreciate amenities trees providing.
-
So there will still be trees and a mended road too. Seems reasonable. We must have more important things to fight for?!
-
We've been arguing for flexipave for over a year. Cllr in charge of contract promises to meet with supplier but hasn't. Council don't listen
-
Well, that's definitely something that residents need to be made aware of (if they're not already). Campaign makes much more sense now.

Let the council lasagna mulch around the curbs, I say, low cost materials, would engage the urban youth to straighten the path, save trees
