I'm no expert, but I just think our intel agencies could use an independent look at longstanding practices, surveillance, etc. and get an overhaul as needed. But it's my impression they wield a lot of influence w/powerful people on the Hill -- and they can beat back oversight.

Which, itself, is a problem (the reciprocity). Reminds me of the NEA and its Democratic protectors in Congress. As academic achievement declines, and as we spend the most $ per pupil in the world, calls for standards, accountability, school choice and vouchers are hushed.

As government gets bigger and more powerful, we become their subjects and powerless to fight them. Look at their pay, their power, lack of accountability. It is almost at the point of no return.

I think it's more about protecting sources and methods. It costs millions of dollars (and sometimes lives) when they are revealed. Because of polarized politics of late, leaks from congress are expensive and sometimes deadly.

And like J, Edgar Hoover and LBJ, certainly possible that intel agencies have info on some pols that are or can be used to get their way. Another argument for term limits.

Sheryl, great observation. I wonder how long it will take the public to wake up and thereby tell congress to get off their lazy butts and do it. However I won't hold my breath.
