Certainly people can write to advocate for (or against) a cause, but (in my opinion) that's advocacy journalism that should be reserved for blogs, publications like Salon, Mother Jones, Slate, etc. not (what used to be) trusted news sources representing themselves as neutral.https://twitter.com/thecjpearson/status/978234524441153536 …

I studied the rise of both the National Socialist Party in Germany and the Communist party in pre Union Russia. The connection is skilled, focused and determined propogandists who gained control of the then media. Goebbels and Lenin were both brilliant manipulators of the people

Journalism, as we’ve know it, is dead, replaced with propaganda. It’s disgusting, discouraging and disappointing.

100% agree. It boils down to what Thomas Sowell said, attached. However, the biggest US corporations are financially enabling & legitimizing the biggest, most sinister online propaganda cesspool, which insists it is a completely nonpartisan "news" org. The reason Walter Cronkite could be a lifelong Democrat yet be trusted by millions was that he reported facts, not theories. There was a line between his reporting and the predictions of Drew Pearson & Jack Anderson. That line has largely disappeared. Our loss!

Journalists don’t seem to know the difference between “The man crossed the road” and “The right wing gun loving racist white homophobic privileged man crossed the road.” One reports what happened while the other editorializes the same action.

The only thing journalists should be an activist for is the truth. Anything else, and it's an op-ed and should be prefaced as such

Isn't that what the "op-ed" pages are for, opinions-editorializing? I learned that in a high school elective class(private parochial) I took on journalism and current events in the '70s. How many actual "journalists" learn this today?

I long for the days where advocacy journalism was found only on the editorial pages of the news paper or in news segments on air which were clearly identified as an opinion piece not as they are today, a bias blended into all coverage.
