This is the same thing my Dad told me years ago with a similar incident. He was a cop for 28yrs. Said he couldn’t imagine NOT running in — his training prepared him for that. But by all accounts, this was also just who and how he was. Charged toward danger.

I am sorry for the deputies if they were trained and directed by their agency to wait. That is not the way it is taught now. Retired 31 years as a major city cop and volunteer as a cold case homicide detective. Negotiator for 28 years. I would have gone in.

I just don't understand the cop not trying to get close enough to get a shot. It's not like he'd be running at the shooter in an open field. And it's not like he'd be running at him unarmed. It's one thing to get close but know you can't get closer w/o getting shot. He didn't try
