During Civil War newspapers proudly stated whether they were Republican or Democrat. No false objectivity.

Partisan is one thing, ideologically indifferent to the truth is another One can be partisan about your preferences and still objective about the facts

When I was a kid I thought Walter Cronkite was the epitome of objective journalism. Then I grew up and figured it out.

No reporting is 100% objective, but journalists used to try.

When was journalism ever objective? Hearst? Morrow? Bernstein? Nah.

There has always been an indistinct line between journalism and propaganda. The Watergate scandal provided motivation for those with a political agenda to further blur the distinction.

If you think journalism today is biased, check out news from the beginnings of the country - especially the editorial cartoons. It was savage but there were a lot of different opinions - not one big conglomerate repeating the same stories with same angles with the same wording.

Sharyl is so correct (as always). Journalism has never been objective since our founding. What we see now is most media being biased left. When I grew up, our city had 2 newspapers with totally opposite points of view. Seemed more balanced then, but maybe not

I've always held that objectivity was impossible to achieve in practice and that journalists would be better off providing balance. None of us can escape our biases, but we can learn to appreciate that there are often two sides to a story. Cheers.

I keep trying to make this point over and over as I hear the moronic reiterations of "FAKE NEWS!" It's always been up to the consumer to exercise his discernment about the objectivity or bias of his source. Now lazy-minded people want their sources labeled by some thought-leader.

You are correct, it's not been objective. Here's a book that's on my list of "to read" but it covers this. The Invention of Journalism Ethics, Second Edition: The Path to Objectivity by Stephen J.A. Ward He's a bit of a leftie but from what I've scanned the book is legit.

There's a difference between being non-objective and being intentionally deceitful.

Objectivity requires a level of detachment that is inconsistent with quality journalism. Strive for fairness. Tell everyone's story.
