Many folks don't like to say "I swear," because they think it implies some sort of religious offense so some, especially mothers in the South, will use "I swanny!"

My Dad said it and I say every now and then when I want people to look at me like I’m a #ProudHillbilly. One of those wonderful southern idioms. I’ve always thought it’s similar to/same as saying “I’ll be!” or “I do declare.” A more current comparison woud be “WTF”

Mom used to say, “well sh*t far!” Only when super mad. Found out in my 30’s it meant “sh*t FIRE and save matches!” 🤣🤣🤣

My mother never said that. She just started swinging a broom handle. She called it attitude adjustment.

Probably means I declare; I believe; I understand. A northern version, I believe, was “I swan”, which I heard growing up in 1950s Kansas

It's an expression of surprise or dismay at something unexpected. My mother used to say "Well, I'll be John Brown!" Similar meaning. #alabamahillbilly
