Carter Page reportedly assisted the FBI with the prosecution and conviction of a Russian spy a few years back. I suppose Page could have done all that with the FBI and then become a Russian spy himself. You probably know more than I do, but I think this may not be exactly correct. Being a foreign agent, for example, isn't itself illegal if you disclose appropriately. Many US people have registered w/Congress and/or DOJ as foreign agents. On the other hand...

Anybody who's met with top business leaders or officials in Russia has likely encountered Russian "operatives" whether they know it or not. Not defending spying, of course. Just saying contacts themselves are constitutionally protected activities.

I have read a lot of articles that imply there's something inherently nefarious about going to Russia, meeting with Russians, doing business in Russia--as millions of Americans do.

Page lived in Russia a few years back working for Merrill Lynch and was interested in Russian energy investments. Russian energy companies are majority owned by government=Putin. But the thousands of US investors and businessmen in this arena aren't necessarily Russian spies.
