People see the outrageous bill insurance pays and feel like they got a lot for their money without realizing that overinflated cost is spread to all of us including through Medicare and Medicaid, which our tax $ covers for others.https://twitter.com/Colony14/status/945788398366875648 …

My brother needed seven stitches for a cut on his thumb. Medicare paid the $8,000 bill. There is no way that 10 minutes of care and two hours of waiting should have cost more than $500.

Neither the Gov’t or private insurance understand one thing: Negotiating fees is not controlling COSTS. It’s controlling PRICE. Those two things are NOT the same. Costs still have to be covered somewhere.

Medical bureaucracy is what we’re paying for. Red tape. Malpractice insurance. Waste. It needs a reboot.

Imagine IF everyone paid for insurance premiums. That would mean NO ONE would have to pay for uninsured care. That would bring down some/most of the costs. Hmmmmm.... That sounds like the Affordable Care Act. Hmmmm....

Imagine if medical care providers and equipment suppliers didn’t overcharge for services simply because it’s someone else’s money. To think that governments involvement would solve a problem is delusional. They make it worse.

You really do not understand the concept of insurance. It is very simple, spread the risk among the largest group that you can. That works for cars, houses, apartments etc. Then let the market compete. Simple and effective.

Let the market compete. Without the aid of government. The same with care providers. The ones that charge outrageous amounts will be weeded out. It will work itself out. To mandate it is to set it up to fail. Many companies refused to hire full time after mandate. It failed.

Well, of course, you are right!!! Repeal the law that requires all people receive care at the emergency room. Stop paying your insurance premium and then pray that you never get sick. There will be no one to treat your illness. Good thinking!!

I haven’t had insurance in decades. I still find treatment when necessary, and it’s reasonably priced. I just had to get over all the voodoo dolls in the office first.

As an MD, this seems false to me... if it was true, providers wd be swimming in $ and we aren't really. I make a fine living, but not $$$$$

And the reason it is $8k is due to fact that sick & elderly cost far more to insure than healthy & fit, thus the dilemma of health care for decades. Ocare never fixed this, we still have a failed system

The only reason it cost $8K is that there is insurance. Take insurance out of the equation and providers will charge reasonable fees.

Just try replacing a windshield in a car. 1st thing they ask is what insurance. Let them quote a price. Then tell 'em you're just gonna pay cash. Cash is about 1/3 the insurance quote, ironically, a similar amount to the deductible on the insurance side. Insurance is a racket.

Was the bill 8k? Did Medicare pay 8k? Or did Medicare pay the allowed contracted rate which might have been only a few hundred? Hospital charges do not equal payment received

Costs are inflated. So is med abuse. Up to mid 1900's people did not see doctors unless it was very serious. Often sutured their own cuts.
