My brother needed seven stitches for a cut on his thumb. Medicare paid the $8,000 bill. There is no way that 10 minutes of care and two hours of waiting should have cost more than $500.

I respectfully suggest that you are mistaken about that. I disagree that it isn't worth more than $500 but there is zero chance Medicare paid $8k. The bill might have been $8k but most would have been adjusted off and unable to be collected due to CMS rules.
-
I was thinking the same thing. No way Medicare would pay that much. It would have to include a few days admit in the hospital.
-
For a one inch laceration repair Medicare pays the physician $178.

My wife needed a test. I called and asked what it would cost. They said, "Depends on your insurance." I asked, "What would you charge me if I had no insurance?" They had no idea! No wonder health care costs are so high.
-
In fact, they were annoyed that I would even ask the question! Apparently no one ever asks. That no one cares is why prices are inflated (along with doctors demanding unnecessary tests to protect themselves from malpractice claims).

Those were the facility, surgeon, labs and anesthesiologist for the 4200. I understand the true cost but those people also have a profit margin to hit and I understand that.

If we eliminated health insurance altogether, you'd see how fast and how far the price of healthcare drops

It's a huge dance the drs, hospitals, & insurance companies are doing ... there's the "insurance negotiated rate" - retail price for a blood test is $280, insurance rate is $32 - crazy! It's a fantasy and it's out of control.

I wish you would also address "balance billing" where patient obtains service from contracted, in-network provider who then does not accept ins co pymt as pymt in full and bills patient for "balance".

My 24 yr old daughter (horseback rider, strong as a horse) had late night pain & felt faint. Told her to Go to walk in ... they told her no Dr present & to go to ER. ER did CAT scan & $6k lab. Total was $14k. Diag was common ovarian cyst. All work was AWAY from ovaries!

Two of my sons had tonsillectomies. $250 each prepaid by me or $600 billed to insurance.
