Smart advice. I, too, lived paycheck to paycheck in my twenties. However, I always put some money into savings, including the money I got from pay increases for years. Many of my friends didn’t. I am in a much better position to retire in the next several years than my friends.

When I first went to work (many years ago) my dad told me to take 10% of my income and save it. He said people go through life always paying everyone but themselves, and you will never miss it. It worked for me and I’ve taught my kids to do the same.

A wise person once told me, “Put $20 away from every paycheck, to retire happy.” Wish I would have listened.

When I was pregnant with my son, we started living on my husband’s salary, which we thought we couldn’t survive on. By the time I went on maternity leave, we had 8 months saved up because we started being careful. I ended up going back only 5 years later
