In 1980, my two-week take home check was $189. It was all the money in world back then. 1/3 split of cable, phone, rent. Hamm's beer was $4.10/case. It tasted like shit, but you learned to like it. Kraft mac&cheese, ramen noodles, rice&beans. I never felt poor.

I was making $9800 a year as a cop in 1980. I was often broke, never poor!

It was the time before government guaranteed student loans & you paid your own way semester by semester. You took courses for a career not a degree.

Choices. We paid into retirement first way back even with 4 kids. Pay off? A great nest egg and we can help with grandkids college.

Like sitting in the day room watching TV with other dorm mates and having a conversation. Or getting into a pick up basketball game with guys from other dorms. Got to meet folks of all racial/political/economic/geographic categories.

Life is about choices! Who you were reflects on your upbringing BUT who you become is up to you! Eg: young, in college = short term poor & learning to live on budget; single, having numerous children w/ several different absentee fathers = lifetime poverty

When I feel financial burden today, I think of those college days when I managed to keep $.86 in my wallet for days. Peanut butter in hot grits, was one way.
