Yes, 80 in a 30 mph zone. It seems.

But excessive speed doesn't rule out the truck or explain why they thought they hit a truck, does it?
-
The rail cars that fell off the bridge may have hit a vehicle when it landed on the interstate.

I think what they meant was that it fell off the track and down onto the freeway, where it hit a truck. Looks like the cause of the accident might have been that the train was going 80 MPH at a spot where it shouldn't have been going more than 30 MPH
-
Oh! I inferred that they said they'd hit a truck which, at that speed, would easily cause a derailment... Thanks

at 10:40 AM in this report the observation was made. But the opp in the area was very intense against the train because of speed. They are pouring everything into the narrative that as they warned, so it has happened. I distrust that that narrative.

Sorry...I put in in another comment lower down & forgot here https://www.washingtonpost.com/national/the-latest-train-cars-hanging-over-the-overpass/2017/12/18/7b35fd18-e416-11e7-927a-e72eac1e73b6_story.html?utm_term=.a7a524d0adfd …

That was early report and I haven't heard anything about it since either.
-
I did a search and can't even find a reference to it, so I wondered if I was dreaming it?

-
I heard that as well in a report. You are not dreaming. But again may be the usual jump to report first without the facts.

It hit two trucks on the freeway after derailing.
-
Yes but the early reports said (implied?) they hit a truck on the track and it derailed.
-
No you are correct. Earlier on even Reuters reported....Train possibly hit "something" on tracks....others reprtd possible truck on tracks. Was said numerous times by numerous sources. No word of that now. But investigation is still early, investigators still looking at tracks

Yes. I believe is was excessive speed (80 on a 30 mph curve)
-
But what made them say they hit a truck at first? Did they say? I assumed speed and the truck were both at issue but only hearing speed now.

Perhaps you heard about the second crash? An Amtrak train collided with a semi truck in Texas on Monday night, just hours after a deadly Amtrak derailment in Washington state.http://www.foxnews.com/us/2017/12/19/amtrak-train-collides-with-semi-truck-in-texas.html …
-
I'm pretty sure you're right and this incident is being confused with the other.
-
I saw that, maybe so.
-
No. They definitely said the Washington train might have hit a truck. The engine is the only rail car that didn't derail & it had front end damage is what I heard early on. I remember cuz I thought it didn't make sense to me for the engine to be only car still on the tracks
-
That was the rear engine. Yes there were reports that derailed cars did hit vehicles on the 5 frwy, I was just mentioning the TX collision that actually involved a truck as the cause of the accident. Didn’t know if she’d heard about that one
